Unit Weight of Steel Plates

UNIT WEIGHT OF STEEL PLATES

The weight of steel plate is an important for project managers, design engineers and site engineers.

Steel is typically priced per tonne (1000kg).

Weight of Steel plate per metre is calculated using the equation

Weight of the steel plate W = Density x Volume

This equation assumes that density of steel plate as 7850 kg/m3, which is usually the general case.

If the density is varying, other methods like using steel tables or manufacturers specifications shall be followed.

Illustrative Example:

Calculate the weight of steel plate as shown in the figure

 Volume of the Plate                       = 1000 x 2000 x 12

                                                                 =2,40,00,000 mm3

                                                                 =0.024 m3

Weight of steel plate                         = Density x volume

                                                                 = 0.024 x 7850

                                                                 = 188.4 kg
